Great opportunity to show-off your web-development skills

About Sunny Side Up

We are a Wellington-based digital agency that has delivered close to 200 web projects. Our work spans startups, non-profits, government, and established New Zealand brands. We focus on building well-designed, maintainable web solutions that deliver long-term value for clients.

The Role

We are looking for an intermediate web developer to join our team on a part-time basis (approximately 10–20 hours per week).

Our preference is for the successful candidate to work most weekday mornings. We are flexible in how these hours are structured, provided there is sufficient overlap with the team for collaboration.

You will work primarily from our Kelburn office, with the option to work from home as part of a hybrid arrangement.

In this role, you will take ownership of features, small projects, and our maintenance programme, contributing to both new builds and ongoing client work. You will be trusted to make technical decisions within your scope while collaborating closely with the wider team.

How We Work

We aim to balance autonomy with support.

You will be given responsibility for your work and the freedom to approach problems in your own way, while being supported through:

  • Regular collaboration with experienced developers
  • Code reviews and shared standards
  • Clear project direction and communication
  • Opportunities to ask questions, show initiative, and refine your approach

We work in an agile, collaborative environment with a strong focus on writing clean, maintainable code and continuously improving systems over time.

Technologies You'll Work With

Most of our backend work is built on the Silverstripe CMS. Experience with Silverstripe is preferred, but not required if you have worked with comparable frameworks.

You will also work with:

  • Linux, Apache, PHP, and MySQL
  • Front-end frameworks such as React, Next.js, or Vue
  • Front-end build tools (e.g. Webpack) and CI processes
  • Composer, Git, and various LLM applications

What We're Looking For

We are looking for an intermediate developer who can take initiative while working effectively within a team. This typically includes:

  • Around 2–4 years of experience in a software development environment
  • Experience working with a LAMP framework (e.g. Silverstripe, Laravel, Craft CMS)
  • The ability to break down problems and implement practical solutions
  • Clear communication skills
  • A collaborative mindset and a desire to improve systems over time
  • Attention to code quality and maintainability
  • A sense of humour

We value developers who think critically about their work, ask good questions, and steadily improve their approach over time.

Why Join Sunny Side Up

  • Part-time role with consistent hours and flexibility in structure
  • Full-time equivalent salary of $80,000–$120,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience
  • Hybrid working environment
  • Office in Kelburn, near the Botanic Garden
  • Exposure to a wide variety of projects and clients
  • Opportunity to develop both technical and practical project skills
  • Supportive, collaborative team environment
  • Encouragement of open-source contribution

Diversity and Inclusion

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and value inclusive, respectful collaboration within the team.
